Mount Prospect Offers Dining Options, Support for Local Restaurants

Post Date:06/17/2020 4:05 PM

Since the Governor’s office announced a move to Phase 3 May 29th, the Village has been hard at work connecting with our local restaurateurs to ensure they are able to reopen with our support.

Blackfinn MZ Square Small 2015As part of Phase 3, diners can enjoy outdoor “al fresco” dining as long as tables are spaced a minimum of 6 feet apart and other safety protocols are followed. Although the Village has had a permitting system in place for outdoor dining on public rights of way, we used this opportunity to encourage outdoor dining by:

  • Expediting review of outdoor dining permits, which have no fee, (turn-around time is usually one business day or less),
  • Allowing for the expansion of outdoor dining areas into parking lots or sidewalks, provided areas are still ADA compliant,
  • Conducted site visits to explore options for those with limited space, as well as to inspect tents for safety requirements.

As a result of this proactive effort by our Community Development team, Mount Prospect now offers over 50 outdoor dining options throughout the Village. These restaurants are further supported through our free Experience Mount Prospect marketing program, which lists al fresco dining options as well as restaurants which offer take out/delivery.

Although your favorite location may have limited or no outdoor seating at this time, keep in mind that the restaurants have a choice, not a requirement, to re-open during Phase 3. Business owners must weigh the pros and cons of opening with limited staff and reduced demand before deciding to re-open.

The Village remains committed to staying up-to-date of changes enabled by the State of Illinois and the Governor’s office, reacting swiftly to accommodate the needs of our restaurateurs. First, in compliance with the Illinois Liquor Commission Guidelines, certain liquor license holders were granted the ability to sell beer and wine in sealed containers for take-out. In recent weeks, the Commission has now allowed for take-out “cocktails to go”, and this perk was granted to all Village Class F, Class S-7 and Class 8 liquor license holders through June 2, 2021. You can now enjoy a margarita with your taco Tuesday, to-go!

While we all are looking for a little more entertainment in our lives, the Village does allow Class F liquor license holders an endorsement to permit outdoor live music between the hours of 11 AM and 11 PM, no special permit required. Some of our restaurants are offering this perk as a component of their al fresco dining.

Of course, as our State’s re-opening plans change, we will continue to adapt our policies to promote small business success.  In the meantime, we thank all of our residents for their ongoing support as we encourage all to “Experience Mount Prospect”!
